Medical Coding Job Duties

Wilmot SD patient medical recordsMedical coders are on the front line of the billing systems for Wilmot SD private practices and healthcare organizations. They have the responsibility to examine the medical records of patients and convert all services provided into universal codes. These services can be for medical, diagnosis or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies used. There are various codes that are utilized in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders use information from sources such as physician and nursing notes, patient charts, and radiology and lab reports. Coders must not only know what services were provided in total for accuracy, but must have a functioning knowledge of all private payer and government regulations that influence coding as well. Inaccurately coded claims can lead to services not being paid for, services being paid for at a reduced rate, or the physician or facility being penalized for improper or fraudulent billing. Since improper coding can actually cost Wilmot SD hospitals and doctors multiple thousands of dollars in earnings each year, a reliable medical coder is a vital asset for any healthcare organization. They can operate in every type of healthcare facility, including private practices, clinics, hospitals and critical care centers. It is not unusual for seasoned medical coders to work at home as an independent contractor or offsite employee.

Medical Biller Job Functions

medical billing collects revenue in Wilmot SD As crucial as the medical coder’s function is, it would be for naught without the collaboration of the medical biller whose efforts bring in revenue. Medical billing clerks are extremely important to Wilmot SD medical facilities and are practically responsible for keeping them in business. Sometimes the biller and coder may be the same man or woman within a medical facility, but they can also be 2 individual specialists. Once the coder has carried out her or his duty, the biller uses the codes provided to fill out and submit claim forms to insurance companies, Medicare or Medicaid. After being adjusted by the appropriate entity, patients can then be invoiced for deductibles and other out of pocket costs. On a regular basis, a medical billing professional may also do any of the following:

  • Confirm health insurance benefits for patients and help them with billing concerns or questions
  • Follow up on patient claims submitted and appeal those that have been denied
  • Work as an intermediary between the healthcare provider, the insurance carriers and the patients for accurate claim settlement
  • Generate and control Accounts Receivables reports
  • Create and take care of unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billing clerks not only are employed by private practices, but also Wilmot SD hospitals, urgent care facilities, medical groups or nursing homes. They may work in any kind of healthcare facility that relies on the revenues generated from billing third party payers and patients.

Medical Coder and Biller Programs and Certification

instructor with Wilmot SD medical billing and coding class studentIt’s imperative that you receive your instruction from a reputable school, whether it’s a community college, technical or trade school. While it is not a requirement in most cases to obtain a professional certification, the school you enroll in should be accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). Most programs only require that you have either a high school diploma or a GED to qualify. The fastest way to become either a medical biller or coder (or both) is to obtain a certificate, which usually takes about 1 year to complete. An Associate Degree is also an option for a more expansive education, which for almost all schools calls for two years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees for medical billing and coding are not widely offered. Once your education has been concluded, although not mandated in the majority of states, you may want to attain a professional certification. Certification is a great method for those new to the field to show prospective Wilmot SD employers that they are not only qualified but dedicated to their occupation. Some of the organizations that provide certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).
  • The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS).
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Completing an accredited medical billing and coding course, in conjunction with obtaining a professional certification, are the best ways to accelerate your new vocation and succeed in the fast growing Wilmot SD medical care field.

Online Medical Billing and Coding Colleges

Wilmot SD student attending medical coding training onlineIf you are interested in convenience and the flexibility of attending classes at home, then selecting an online medical billing and coding college may be an excellent option. They can be especially attractive to students living in Wilmot SD who plan on attending school while continuing to work or have additional responsibilities that make going to classes on campus challenging. And as an added benefit, online colleges are in many cases less expensive than the conventional classroom options. Expenses for such things as tuition, study materials and commuting may be minimized or eliminated. But be cautious, as not all online colleges are reputable. For that reason it’s important to verify that any online school you choose is accredited to guarantee a quality education. We will review the benefits of accreditation in the next section. Just make sure to verify that any online instruction you are looking at is accredited by one of the national accrediting organizations, for instance the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. So if you are dedicated enough to apply yourself to this type of learning, then obtaining your degree or certificate online may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Medical Billing and Coding Training Programs

Questions to ask Wilmot SD medical billing and coding schoolsOnce you have a better idea what a medical coder and biller does, along with what training options are available, you must start the process of researching schools. But since there are numerous training options available at community colleges and technical, trade and vocational schools within the Wilmot SD area, you should have a prepared list of questions to evaluate each one. And when you add all of the online colleges that offer medical billing and coding classes, the project can become rather daunting. As we have already addressed, cost and location are going to be significant issues, particularly if you have a limited budget and will be commuting to classes from your Wilmot home. And whether or not the school and program are accredited should be part of your vetting process as well. So let’s take a look at some of the other questions that you should ask the schools you are looking at so that you can compare each one and make the ideal choice.

Is the Training Accredited? It’s important that the school and program you decide on are accredited by a recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online college, it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. Not only will accreditation help ensure that the education you receive will be of the highest quality, it could help with your future employment also. A number of Wilmot SD medical facilities will only employ entry level applicants that have completed an accredited medical coding and billing educational course. And financial aid and student loans are in many cases only obtainable for schools that have received an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Prior to selecting a medical billing and coding college, find out what its ranking and reputation are among other schools. This is especially important if you have no experience in the profession, since potential employers will primarily be relying on the quality of your training. As we have discussed, verifying that the school is accredited is an initial step. Checking with college rating organizations, such as U.S. News and World Report, can verify the quality of the school also. Another option is to check with some Wilmot SD healthcare organizations that you might be interested in working for and ask which schools they suggest. Remember that even when the school itself does not have an exceptional reputation, its medical billing and coding program may still be well regarded.

Is there a Job Placement Program? Obtaining employment in Wilmot SD after graduation in your new profession may be challenging without the support of a job assistance program. Find out if the colleges you are looking at have job assistance programs and what their job placement rates are. A rapid and high placement rate is an excellent indication that the coding and billing school has a sizable network of healthcare employers where they can place their graduates. It also implies that the college’s graduates are in high demand in the marketplace.

Where is the School’s Location? If you are intending on commuting to class from your Wilmot SD residence, then the location of the program will be of prime importance. Obviously if you choose an online medical billing and coding program, then the location of the college will not be a factor. One thing to remember is that if you go to classes at a community or junior college, most require a higher tuition for pupils that reside outside of their districts. So you may prefer to first consider those colleges that are within your local area.

What is the Overall Cost? Medical billing and coding certification courses can vary in cost depending on the type of credential earned and the amount of training furnished. But remember, tuition is not the only expense for your education. Costs also consist of such items as the cost of supplies, books and commuting. Financial aid may be accessible to help reduce some of the cost, so don’t forget to check with the college’s financial aid department to find out what is offered in Wilmot SD. Naturally if you decide to enroll in an online college, some of these additional costs, particularly for commuting may be minimized or even eliminated.

Are Classes Available that Match your Schedule? Many students keep working while attending school and need a flexible class schedule. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Wilmot SD, make sure that they are available at those times. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the college you decide on provides that alternative. Also, find out what the process is for making up classes missed due to sickness, work or family emergencies.
