Medical Coding Job Functions

Charlestown RI patient medical recordsMedical coders are on the front line of the billing systems for Charlestown RI private practices and hospitals. They have the responsibility to review the treatment records of patients and assign universal codes to all services provided. These services can be for diagnosis, medical or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies utilized. There are multiple codes that are used in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders use information from sources including physician and nursing notes, patient charts, and radiology and lab reports. Medical Coders must know not only what total services were provided for accuracy, but must have a functioning knowledge of all private payer and government regulations that impact coding as well. Inaccurately coded claims can lead to services not being covered, services being paid at a decreased rate, or the provider being penalized for fraudulent or improper billing. Since improper coding can in fact cost Charlestown RI hospitals and doctors many thousands of dollars in revenue annually, a proficient medical coder is an important asset for any healthcare team. They can operate in any type of healthcare facility, including family practices, clinics, hospitals and emergency care centers. It is not unusual for seasoned medical coders to operate at home as an independent contractor or offsite employee.

Medical Biller Job Summary

medical billing collects revenue in Charlestown RI As essential as the medical coder’s role is, it would be for naught without the collaboration of the medical biller whose labors generate revenue. Medical billing clerks are very important to Charlestown RI medical facilities and are essentially responsible for keeping their doors open. In many cases the biller and coder can be the same individual within a healthcare facility, but they can also be two separate professionals. When the coder has performed his or her duty, the biller uses the codes supplied to fill out and submit claim forms to insurance carriers, Medicaid or Medicare. After they have been paid by the applicable entity, patients can then be billed for deductibles and other out of pocket costs. On a regular basis, a medical billing clerk can also do any of the following:

  • Confirm medical insurance coverages for patients and help them with billing concerns or questions
  • Follow up on submitted patient claims and appeal any that have been denied
  • Work as an intermediary between the healthcare provider, the insurance carriers and the patients for proper claim resolution
  • Create and control Accounts Receivables reports
  • Generate and deal with unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billing clerks not only work for family practices, but also Charlestown RI hospitals, urgent care facilities, medical groups or nursing homes. They can practice in any type of healthcare facility that relies on the revenues generated by billing third party payers and patients.

Medical Billing and Coding Training and Certification

Even though it is not required in many cases to attain a professional certification, the school you enroll in should be accredited (more on the benefits of accreditation later). The majority of schools simply require that you have either a high school diploma or a GED to be eligible. The quickest way to become either a medical coder or biller (or both) is to earn a certificate, which typically takes about a year to complete. An Associate Degree is also an option for a more comprehensive education, which for most colleges calls for 2 years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees for medical coding and billing are not widely offered. When your training has been concluded, although not mandated in most states, you might want to attain a professional certification. Certification is an effective way for those new to the field to show potential Charlestown RI employers that they are not only qualified but committed to their career. Some of the organizations that make available certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).
  • The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS).
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Completing an accredited medical billing and coding program, along with obtaining a professional certification, are the most effective ways to advance your new profession and succeed in the rapid growing Charlestown RI medical care industry.

But be careful, as not all online schools are reputable. That’s why it’s important to confirm that the online school you select is accredited to ensure a superior education. We will review the benefits of accreditation in the next segment. Just make sure to check that any online training you are researching is accredited by one of the national accrediting organizations, for instance the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. So if you are disciplined enough to apply yourself to this type of learning, then obtaining your certificate or degree online may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Medical Biller and Coder Schools

Questions to ask Charlestown RI medical billing and coding schoolsOnce you have a general idea just what a medical biller and coder does, along with what training options are offered, you need to begin the process of comparing colleges. But since there many training options offered at community colleges as well as trade, vocational and technical schools within the Charlestown RI area, you need to have a ready list of questions to evaluate each one. And when you add all of the online programs that offer medical billing and coding classes, the task can become somewhat daunting. As we have already discussed, cost and location are going to be significant factors, especially if you have a modest budget and will be commuting to classes from your Charlestown home. And whether or not the school and program are accredited should be part of your vetting procedure as well. So let’s review a few of the additional questions that you should ask the programs you are reviewing so that you can evaluate each one and make the right choice.

Is the Program Accredited? It’s vital that the program and school you pick are accredited by a highly regarded accrediting agency, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online school, it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. Not only will accreditation help guarantee that the education you get will be of superior quality, it may help with your future employment also. Many Charlestown RI healthcare organizations will only employ entry level candidates that have completed an accredited medical billing and coding training program. And financial aid and student loans are in many cases only available for schools that have earned an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Prior to picking a medical billing and coding program, check out what its ranking and reputation are among other programs. This is particularly relevant if you have no experience in the industry, since potential employers will primarily be relying on the quality of your training. As we have addressed, making sure that the program is accredited is a first step. Checking with college rating organizations, for example U.S. News and World Report, can validate the quality of the school as well. Another option is to call several Charlestown RI medical organizations that you might be interested in working for and ask which schools they recommend. Keep in mind that even if the college itself does not have an exceptional reputation, its medical coding and billing program may still be well regarded.

Is there a Job Referral Program? Finding a job in Charlestown RI after graduating in your new field might be difficult without the help of a job placement program. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their job placement rates are. A rapid and high placement rate is an excellent indication that the coding and billing college has a substantial network of healthcare employers where they can place their graduates. It also implies that the college’s graduates are in high demand in the marketplace.

Where is the School’s Location? If you are planning on commuting to class from your Charlestown RI home, then the location of the program will be of significant importance. Obviously if you enroll in an online medical billing and coding program, then the location of the college will not be important. One thing to keep in mind is that if you go to classes at a community or junior college, many require a higher tuition for pupils that reside outside of their districts. So you might prefer to first consider those schools that are within your local area.

What is the Complete Expense? Medical billing and coding training courses can fluctuate in cost depending on the type of credential acquired and the length of training provided. But remember, tuition is not the only cost of your education. Expenditures also consist of such items as the cost of supplies, books and commuting. Financial aid may be accessible to help reduce some of the expense, so don’t forget to check with the school’s financial aid department to find out what is offered in Charlestown RI. Of course if you decide to attend an online college, some of these additional costs, particularly for commuting may be lessened or even eliminated.

Are Classes Available that Fit your Schedule? A number of students keep working while going to school and need a convenient class schedule. If you can only go to classes during the evenings or on weekends near Charlestown RI, confirm that they are available at those times. If you can only enroll on a part time schedule, make sure that the program you select provides that option. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up classes missed because of sickness, work or family responsibilities.
