Medical Coding Job Functions

West Haverstraw NY patient medical recordsMedical coders are on the forefront of the billing systems for West Haverstraw NY private practices and hospitals. Coders have the responsibility to examine the treatment records of patients and assign universal codes to all services provided. These services can be for diagnosis, medical or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies utilized. There are multiple codes that are used in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders depend on information from sources such as physician and nursing notes, patient charts, and lab and radiology reports. Medical Coders must know not only what total services were provided for accuracy, but must have a functioning knowledge of all government and private payer regulations that affect coding also. Incorrectly coded claims may lead to services not being covered, services being paid for at a lower rate, or the physician or facility being penalized for improper or fraudulent billing. Since improper coding can literally cost West Haverstraw NY physicians and medical facilities many thousands of dollars in income annually, a reliable medical coder is a necessary asset to the healthcare organization. They can work in any type of healthcare facility, including private practices, clinics, hospitals and critical care centers. It is not uncommon for seasoned medical coders to work at home as an offsite employee or an independent contractor.

Medical Billing Job Functions

medical billing collects revenue in West Haverstraw NY As vital as the medical coder’s function is, it would be for naught without the contribution of the medical biller whose efforts produce revenue. Medical billing clerks are very important to West Haverstraw NY medical facilities and are practically responsible for keeping their doors open. Sometimes the biller and coder can be the same individual within a healthcare facility, but they can also be two independent professionals. Once the coder has completed his or her task, the biller utilizes the codes supplied to fill out and submit claim forms to insurance companies, Medicare or Medicaid. After being paid by the applicable organization, patients can then be charged for deductibles and additional out of pocket expenses. On a routine basis, a medical biller may also do any of the following:

  • Check health insurance coverages for patients and assist them with billing concerns or questions
  • Follow up on submitted patient claims and appeal any that have been denied
  • Function as an intermediary between the medical provider, the insurance carriers and the patients for proper claim resolution
  • Produce and manage Accounts Receivables reports
  • Produce and manage unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billing clerks not only work for private practices, but also West Haverstraw NY emergency care facilities, hospitals, medical groups or nursing homes. They can work in any type of healthcare facility that relies on the revenues generated by billing third party payers and patients.

Some of the organizations that make available certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).

  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Things to Ask Medical Biller and Coder Training Programs

Questions to ask West Haverstraw NY medical billing and coding schoolsNow that you have a general idea just what a medical coder and biller does, as well as what training options are offered, you must begin the process of comparing colleges. But since there a large number of training options available at community colleges as well as vocational, technical and trade schools within the West Haverstraw NY area, you need to have a prepared list of questions in order to assess each one. And when you include all of the online programs that offer medical billing and coding classes, the task can become somewhat daunting. As we have already covered, location and cost are going to be important factors, especially if you have a modest budget and will be driving to classes from your West Haverstraw home. And verifying that the program and school are accredited should be part of your vetting procedure also. So let’s take a look at a few of the other questions that you should ask the schools you are reviewing so that you can evaluate each one and make the best choice.

Is the Training Accredited? It’s vital that the program and school you choose are accredited by a highly regarded accrediting organization, for instance the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online college, it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. Not only will accreditation help confirm that the training you get will be of the highest quality, it could help secure future employment also. A number of West Haverstraw NY medical facilities will only employ entry level applicants that have completed an accredited medical coding and billing training course. And financial aid and student loans are in many cases only offered for schools that have obtained an accreditation.

What is the Program’s Reputation? Prior to enrolling in a medical coding and billing program, check out what its reputation and ranking are among other colleges. This is particularly relevant if you have no experience in the field, since potential employers will mostly be relying on the quality of your training. As we have addressed, making sure that the program is accredited is a first step. Checking with college rating organizations, for instance U.S. News and World Report, can verify the quality of the school also. Another option is to get in touch with several West Haverstraw NY healthcare organizations that you might have an interest in working for and ask which schools they suggest. Keep in mind that even when the college itself does not have an excellent reputation, its medical billing and coding program may still be highly regarded.

Is there a Job Placement Program? Obtaining employment in West Haverstraw NY after graduating in your new field can be difficult without the support of a job assistance program. Ask if the colleges you are considering have job assistance programs and what their job placement rates are. A rapid and high placement rate is a good indication that the coding and billing school has a considerable network of healthcare employers where they can place their graduates. It also suggests that the school’s graduates are in high demand in the marketplace.

Where is the School Located? If you are intending on driving to class from your West Haverstraw NY home, then the location of the college will be of prime importance. Naturally if you select an medical coding and billing online program, then the location of the college will not be important. One thing to remember is that if you attend classes at a junior or community college, most charge a higher tuition for enrollees that reside outside of their districts. So you may want to first research those schools that are within your local area.

What is the Overall Expense? Medical billing and coding training courses can differ in cost depending on the type of credential obtained and the amount of training provided. Just keep in mind, tuition is not the only cost of your education. Costs also consist of such things as the cost of supplies, books and commuting. Financial aid may be accessible to help offset a portion of the expense, so don’t forget to check with the college’s financial assistance department to see what is offered in West Haverstraw NY. Naturally if you decide to enroll in an online school, a portion of these additional costs, such as for commuting may be reduced or even eliminated.

Are Classes Available that Accommodate your Schedule? A number of students keep working while going to school and need a convenient class schedule. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near West Haverstraw NY, verify that they are offered at those times. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you enroll in provides that option. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up classes missed because of illness, work or family responsibilities.
