Medical Coding Job Duties

Southaven MS patient medical recordsMedical coders are on the front line of the billing systems for Southaven MS private practices and hospitals. Coders have the responsibility to examine the medical records of patients and convert all services provided into universal codes. These services can be for medical, diagnosis or dental procedures, or any medical supplies or equipment utilized. There are multiple codes that are used in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders rely on information from sources such as physician and nursing notes, patient charts, and radiology and lab reports. Medical Coders must know not only what total services were provided for accuracy, but must have a functioning knowledge of all private payer and government rules that impact coding also. Incorrectly coded claims can result in services not being paid for, services being paid at a decreased rate, or the provider being penalized for fraudulent or improper billing. Since improper coding can actually cost Southaven MS doctors and hospitals many thousands of dollars in revenue annually, a reliable medical coder is an important asset for any healthcare team. They can operate in every type of healthcare facility, including private practices, hospitals, clinics and urgent care centers. It is not uncommon for experienced medical coders to work at home as an independent contractor or offsite employee.

Medical Billing Job Summary

medical billing collects revenue in Southaven MS As vital as the medical coder’s job is, it would be for naught without the contribution of the medical biller whose labors generate revenue. Medical billing clerks are extremely important to Southaven MS medical organizations and are essentially responsible for keeping their doors open. Often the coder and biller may be the same person within a medical organization, but they can also be two separate professionals. Once the coder has carried out his or her task, the biller utilizes the codes supplied to complete and submit claim forms to insurance companies, Medicaid or Medicare. After being paid by the applicable entity, patients can then be invoiced for deductibles and additional out of pocket costs. On a routine basis, a medical billing clerk may also do any of the following:

  • Verify medical insurance benefits for patients and assist them with billing questions or concerns
  • Follow up on patient claims submitted and appeal those that have been declined
  • Work as an intermediary between the healthcare provider, the insurance companies and the patients for proper claim settlement
  • Produce and oversee Accounts Receivables reports
  • Create and manage unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billers not only work for private practices, but also Southaven MS hospitals, urgent care facilities, medical groups or nursing homes. They may work in every kind of healthcare facility that depends on the incomes generated from billing third party payers and patients.

Most schools just require that you earn either a high school diploma or a GED to appy. The fastest way to become either a medical coder or biller (or both) is to earn a certificate, which usually takes about 1 year to complete. An Associate Degree is also an option for a more extensive education, which for the majority of schools calls for two years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees in medical billing and coding are not widely offered. After your training has been concluded, although not mandated in the majority of states, you may want to attain a professional certification. Certification is an excellent means for those new to the profession to show prospective Southaven MS employers that they are not only qualified but committed to their occupation. A few of the organizations that offer certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).
  • The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS).
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Points to Ask Medical Coding and Billing Colleges

Questions to ask Southaven MS medical billing and coding schoolsNow that you have a general idea just what a medical biller and coder does, in addition to what training options are offered, you need to begin the process of comparing schools. But since there a large number of training options offered at community colleges and trade, vocational and technical schools within the Southaven MS area, you should have a ready list of questions in order to assess each one. And when you add all of the online colleges that offer medical coding and billing classes, the project can become somewhat daunting. As we have already addressed, expense and location are going to be relevant factors, especially if you have a modest budget and will be traveling to classes from your Southaven home. And whether or not the school and program are accredited must be part of your vetting process also. So let’s take a look at some of the additional questions that you should ask the programs you are reviewing so that you can compare each one and make the ideal choice.

Is the School Accredited? It’s important that the program and school you select are accredited by a recognized accrediting agency, for instance the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online school, it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. Not only will accreditation help guarantee that the education you get will be of superior quality, it might help secure future employment also. A number of Southaven MS healthcare organizations will only hire entry level applicants that have completed an accredited medical billing and coding educational program. And financial assistance and student loans are frequently only obtainable for schools that have obtained an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Before enrolling in a medical billing and coding program, check out what its reputation and ranking are compared to other schools. This is particularly imperative if you have no experience in the industry, since potential employers will mainly be evaluating you based on the quality of your education. As we have addressed, confirming that the program is accredited is an initial step. Checking with college rating organizations, such as U.S. News and World Report, can confirm the quality of the school as well. Another option is to contact several Southaven MS healthcare organizations that you may be interested in working for and ask which colleges they suggest. Remember that even when the college itself does not have an exceptional reputation, its medical coding and billing program may still be well regarded.

Is there a Job Assistance Program? Finding a job in Southaven MS after graduating in your new field may be difficult without the support of a job assistance program. Find out if the colleges you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their job placement rates are. A rapid and high placement rate is a good indication that the coding and billing college has a significant network of medical care employers where they can place their graduates. It also implies that the school’s graduates are in high demand in the marketplace.

Where is the College’s Location? If you are planning on driving to class from your Southaven MS home, then the location of the program will be of prime importance. Naturally if you enroll in an medical billing and coding online program, then the location of the college will not be a factor. One thing to bear in mind is that if you attend classes at a community or junior college, most charge a higher tuition for enrollees that live outside of their districts. So you may want to first look at those colleges that are within your local area.

What is the Total Expense? Medical coding and billing certification courses can differ in cost based on the type of credential acquired and the length of training furnished. But remember, tuition is not the only expense for your education. Costs also include such items as the cost of supplies, books and commuting. Financial aid may be obtainable to help offset a portion of the expense, so don’t forget to contact the school’s financial assistance department to see what is offered in Southaven MS. Naturally if you decide to attend an online college, a portion of these added costs, such as for commuting may be minimized or even eliminated.

Are Classes Available that Match your Schedule? Many students continue working while going to school and require a flexible class schedule. If you can only go to classes during the evenings or on weekends near Southaven MS, make sure that they are offered at those times. If you can only attend on a part-time schedule, confirm that the program you enroll in provides that alternative. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up classes missed due to sickness, work or family emergencies.

    Southaven, Mississippi

Southaven is a city in DeSoto County, Mississippi, United States. It is a principal city in Greater Memphis. The 2010 census reported a population of 48,982,[4] making Southaven the third-largest city in Mississippi and the second most populous suburb of Memphis.[6] Southaven is traversed from north to south by the I-55/I-69 freeway. The city's name derives from the fact that Southaven is located south of Whitehaven, a neighborhood in Memphis.

Southaven began as a village when Memphis homebuilder Kemmons Wilson (founder of Holiday Inn) wished to develop a few residential subdivisions featuring small starter homes just across the Mississippi border from Whitehaven, Tennessee, an unincorporated suburb of Memphis. Whitehaven was eventually annexed by Memphis. Officially incorporated in 1980, Southaven is one of the fastest-growing cities in the southeastern United States.[citation needed] In just 20 years, Southaven doubled its land area, while its population tripled.

The construction of Interstate 55 through Southaven in the 1970s helped to promote growth and make for easier access to the city from Memphis, Jackson, St. Louis, and Chicago. Interstate 69, which will eventually run from Canada to Mexico, was cosigned with I-55 in Southaven in 2007.[7]
