Medical Coding Job Description

Wendell Depot MA patient medical recordsMedical coders work on the front line of the billing systems for Wendell Depot MA private practices and hospitals. Coders have the responsibility to review the medical records of patients and assign universal codes to all services provided. These services can be for medical, diagnosis or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies utilized. There are various codes that are utilized in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders use information from sources including nursing and physician notes, patient charts, and lab and radiology reports. Coders must know not only what total services were provided for accurate reporting, but must have a functioning knowledge of all private payer and government regulations that influence coding as well. Improperly coded claims can result in services not being paid for, services being paid for at a lower rate, or the provider being penalized for improper or fraudulent billing. Since improper coding can literally cost Wendell Depot MA doctors and hospitals multiple thousands of dollars in income annually, a proficient medical coder is a vital asset to the healthcare team. They can work in every type of healthcare facility, including private practices, clinics, hospitals and emergency care centers. It is not unusual for professional medical coders to operate at home as an offsite employee or an independent contractor.

Medical Billing Job Duties

medical billing collects revenue in Wendell Depot MA As crucial as the medical coder’s role is, it would be for naught without the contribution of the medical biller whose efforts bring in revenue. Medical billing clerks are very important to Wendell Depot MA medical organizations and are literally responsible for keeping them in business. Often the coder and biller can be the same man or woman within a medical facility, but they can also be two separate professionals. When the coder has performed her or his task, the biller utilizes the codes provided to fill out and submit claim forms to insurance carriers, Medicaid or Medicare. After being paid by the applicable organization, patients can then be invoiced for deductibles and additional out of pocket costs. On a routine basis, a medical billing professional may also do any of the following:

  • Check medical insurance benefits for patients and assist them with billing questions or concerns
  • Follow up on patient claims submitted and appeal those that have been declined
  • Act as a mediator between the healthcare provider, the insurance carriers and the patients for accurate claim settlement
  • Create and control Accounts Receivables reports

And financial assistance and student loans are in many cases only obtainable for programs that have obtained an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Before enrolling in a medical coding and billing program, find out what its reputation and ranking are among other schools. This is particularly relevant if you have no experience in the profession, since potential employers will primarily be evaluating you based on the quality of your education. As we have covered, confirming that the college is accredited is an initial step. Checking with college rating organizations, for instance U.S. News and World Report, can verify the quality of the school as well. Another option is to contact several Wendell Depot MA healthcare organizations that you may be interested in working for and ask which schools they suggest. Remember that even when the school itself does not have an exceptional reputation, its medical billing and coding program may still be well regarded.

Ask if the schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their job placement rates are. A rapid and high placement rate is a good indication that the billing and coding college has a substantial network of healthcare employers where they can place their graduates. It also implies that the college’s graduates are sought after in the marketplace.

Where is the College’s Location? If you are anticipating driving to class from your Wendell Depot MA residence, then the location of the campus will be of prime importance. Of course if you select an medical coding and billing online program, then the location of the college will not be a consideration. One thing to bear in mind is that if you go to classes at a junior or community college, many charge a higher tuition for students that reside outside of their districts. So you may prefer to first look at those colleges that are within your local area.

What is the Complete Cost? Medical coding and billing certification programs can vary in cost based on the type of credential obtained and the amount of training furnished. But remember, tuition is not the only cost of your education. Expenses also consist of such items as the cost of supplies, books and commuting. Financial aid might be obtainable to help offset a portion of the expense, so make sure to check with the school’s financial assistance department to find out what is available in Wendell Depot MA. Naturally if you decide to attend an online college, some of these additional costs, particularly for commuting may be lessened or even eliminated.

Are Classes Available that Fit your Schedule? Many students continue working while attending school and need a convenient class schedule. If you can only attend classes during the evenings or on weekends near Wendell Depot MA, verify that they are available at those times.
