Medical Coding Job Description

Papaikou HI patient medical recordsMedical coders work on the front line of the billing systems for Papaikou HI private practices and hospitals. Coders have the responsibility to review the medical records of patients and assign universal codes to all services provided. These services may be for medical, diagnosis or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies utilized. There are multiple codes that are utilized in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders use information from sources including nursing and physician notes, patient charts, and lab and radiology reports. Medical Coders must not only know what services were provided in total for accuracy, but must have a functioning knowledge of all government and private payer regulations that impact coding as well. Incorrectly coded claims may result in services not being paid for, services being paid at a decreased rate, or the physician or facility being penalized for improper or fraudulent billing. Since improper coding can in fact cost Papaikou HI physicians and medical facilities many thousands of dollars in income every year, a proficient medical coder is a necessary asset to the healthcare organization. They can operate in any kind of healthcare facility, including private practices, clinics, hospitals and urgent care centers. It is not unusual for seasoned medical coders to work at home as an independent contractor or offsite employee.

Medical Billing Job Summary

medical billing collects revenue in Papaikou HI As vital as the medical coder’s function is, it would be for nothing without the contribution of the medical biller whose efforts bring in revenue. Medical billing clerks are extremely important to Papaikou HI healthcare organizations and are essentially responsible for keeping them in business. Often the biller and coder are the same person within a medical facility, but they can also be two individual professionals. After being paid by the applicable organization, patients can then be billed for deductibles and other out of pocket costs. On a regular basis, a medical billing clerk can also do any of the following:

  • Verify medical insurance coverages for patients and assist them with billing concerns or questions
  • Follow up on patient claims submitted and appeal any that have been denied
  • Act as an intermediate between the medical provider, the insurance companies and the patients for accurate claim resolution
  • Create and oversee Accounts Receivables reports
  • Produce and handle unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billing clerks not only work for family practices, but also Papaikou HI emergency care facilities, hospitals, medical groups or nursing homes. They can practice in any type of medical facility that depends on the revenues generated from billing patients and third party payers.

While it is not a requirement in many cases to obtain a professional certification, the school you choose should be accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). The majority of schools simply require that you have either a high school diploma or a GED to qualify. The quickest way to becoming either a medical coder or biller (or both) is to earn a certificate, which generally takes about a year to finish. An Associate Degree is also an option for a more comprehensive education, which for the majority of schools requires two years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees in medical coding and billing are not widely available. Once your education has been completed, although not required in most states, you may wish to acquire a professional certification. Certification is a great way for those new to the field to show prospective Papaikou HI employers that they are not only qualified but dedicated to their career. Some of the organizations that offer certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).
  • The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS).
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

And as an additional advantage, online schools are often less expensive than the standard classroom alternatives. Costs for such items as tuition, course materials and commuting may be minimized or eliminated. But be careful, as not all online programs are reputable. For that reason it’s imperative to verify that the online program you select is accredited to guarantee a premium education. We will review the benefits of accreditation in the next segment. Just make sure to check that any online classes you are looking at is accredited by one of the national accrediting organizations, for example the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. So if you are disciplined enough to commit yourself to this type of learning, then attaining your certificate or degree online might be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Medical Coder and Biller Training Programs

Questions to ask Papaikou HI medical billing and coding schoolsNow that you have a better idea what a medical biller and coder does, in addition to what education options are available, you must start the process of researching schools. But since there a large number of training options available at community colleges and trade, vocational and technical schools within the Papaikou HI area, you need to have a ready list of questions in order to evaluate each one. And when you include all of the online colleges that offer medical billing and coding classes, the project can become rather formidable. As we have already discussed, cost and location are going to be relevant factors, particularly if you have a modest budget and will be traveling to classes from your Papaikou home. And whether or not the program and school are accredited should be part of your vetting procedure also. So let’s review several of the other questions that you should ask the colleges you are reviewing so that you can analyze each one and make the right choice.

Is the Program Accredited? It’s crucial that the program and school you choose are accredited by a highly regarded accrediting agency, for instance the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online program, it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. Not only will accreditation help guarantee that the education you receive will be of superior quality, it could help with your future employment also. Many Papaikou HI medical organizations will only employ entry level candidates that have completed an accredited medical billing and coding training program. And financial aid and student loans are often only available for schools that have obtained an accreditation.

What is the Program’s Reputation? Before selecting a medical billing and coding college, check out what its reputation and ranking are compared to other programs. This is particularly relevant if you have no experience in the profession, since potential employers will mainly be evaluating you based on the quality of your education. As we have addressed, verifying that the school is accredited is a first step. Checking with college rating organizations, such as U.S. News and World Report, can validate the quality of the school as well. Another option is to call some Papaikou HI medical organizations that you may have an interest in working for and find out which colleges they suggest. Keep in mind that even if the college itself does not have an excellent reputation, its medical coding and billing program may still be highly regarded.

Is there a Job Placement Program? Finding a job in Papaikou HI after graduation in your new field might be difficult without the help of a job assistance program. Ask if the colleges you are considering have job assistance programs and what their job placement rates are. A rapid and high placement rate is an excellent indication that the billing and coding college has a substantial network of medical care employers where they can refer their graduates. It also indicates that the college’s graduates are in high demand in the marketplace.

Where is the School’s Location? If you are intending on driving to class from your Papaikou HI home, then the location of the college will be of significant importance. Naturally if you enroll in an online medical billing and coding program, then the location of the school will not be a consideration. One thing to remember is that if you go to classes at a junior or community college, most require a higher tuition for pupils that live outside of their districts. So you might want to first consider those colleges that are within your local area.

What is the Complete Cost? Medical billing and coding certification courses can differ in cost depending on the type of credential obtained and the length of training provided. Just keep in mind, tuition is not the only expense for your education. Costs also include such items as the cost of supplies, books and commuting. Financial aid might be obtainable to help reduce some of the cost, so make sure to get in touch with the school’s financial assistance department to see what is available in Papaikou HI. Of course if you decide to enroll in an online college, a portion of these added costs, particularly for commuting may be reduced or even eliminated.

Are Classes Available that Accommodate your Schedule? Many students continue working while going to college and need a convenient class schedule. If you can only go to classes during the evenings or on weekends near Papaikou HI, make sure that they are offered at those times. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, make certain that the college you enroll in offers that alternative. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up classes missed due to sickness, work or family emergencies.
