Medical Coding Job Summary

Thorne Bay AK patient medical recordsMedical coders are on the forefront of the billing systems for Thorne Bay AK private practices and hospitals. Coders have the responsibility to review the treatment records of patients and convert all services provided into universal codes. These services may be for diagnosis, medical or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies utilized. There are several codes that are utilized in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders rely on information from sources such as nursing and physician notes, patient charts, and radiology and lab reports. Coders must know not only what total services were provided for accurate reporting, but must have a working knowledge of all government and private payer rules that influence coding as well. Incorrectly coded claims can result in services not being covered, services being paid for at a lower rate, or the provider being penalized for improper or fraudulent billing. Since improper coding can literally cost Thorne Bay AK doctors and hospitals multiple thousands of dollars in revenue annually, a good medical coder is a necessary asset to the healthcare organization. They can work in every kind of healthcare facility, including family practices, hospitals, clinics and critical care centers. It is not unusual for seasoned medical coders to operate at home as an independent contractor or offsite employee.

Often the biller and coder may be the same man or woman within a medical facility, but they can also be two independent specialists. On a routine basis, a medical biller can also do any of the following:

  • Check health insurance benefits for patients and assist them with billing concerns or questions
  • Follow up on patient claims submitted and appeal any that have been denied
  • Work as an intermediate between the healthcare provider, the insurance companies and the patients for accurate claim settlement
  • Generate and manage Accounts Receivables reports
  • Generate and manage unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billing clerks not only are employed by private practices, but also Thorne Bay AK hospitals, urgent care facilities, medical groups or nursing homes. They may practice in every kind of medical facility that depends on the revenues generated by billing third party payers and patients.

As we have already addressed, cost and location are going to be important factors, especially if you have a limited budget and will be commuting to classes from your Thorne Bay residence. And whether or not the school and program are accredited should be part of your vetting procedure also. So let’s review some of the other questions that you should ask the colleges you are reviewing so that you can analyze each one and make the ideal choice.

Is the School Accredited? It’s essential that the program and college you pick are accredited by a respected accrediting agency, for instance the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online program, it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. Not only will accreditation help ensure that the education you receive will be of superior quality, it might help with your future employment as well. A number of Thorne Bay AK healthcare organizations will only hire entry level candidates that have completed an accredited medical billing and coding educational program. And financial aid and student loans are in many cases only offered for schools that have obtained an accreditation.

What is the Program’s Reputation? Before enrolling in a medical billing and coding program, check out what its reputation and ranking are among other colleges. This is especially relevant if you have no experience in the field, since potential employers will mainly be evaluating you based on the quality of your education. As we have addressed, confirming that the school is accredited is a first step. Checking with school rating organizations, such as U.S. News and World Report, can validate the quality of the school also. An alternative is to call some Thorne Bay AK medical organizations that you might be interested in working for and find out which programs they recommend. Keep in mind that even when the college itself does not have an exceptional reputation, its medical coding and billing program may still be highly regarded.

Is there a Job Placement Program? Obtaining a job in Thorne Bay AK after graduation in your new profession may be difficult without the support of a job assistance program. Check if the colleges you are looking at have job placement programs and what their job placement rates are. A high and rapid placement rate is a good indication that the coding and billing school has a substantial network of healthcare employers where they can place their graduates. It also indicates that the school’s graduates are in high demand in the marketplace.

Where is the College’s Location? If you are anticipating driving to class from your Thorne Bay AK home, then the location of the program will be of prime importance. Obviously if you choose an medical coding and billing online program, then the location of the college will not be a consideration. One thing to remember is that if you attend classes at a community or junior college, most charge a higher tuition for enrollees that reside outside of their districts. So you may prefer to first research those schools that are within your local area.

What is the Total Cost? Medical coding and billing training programs can fluctuate in cost based on the type of credential obtained and the amount of training furnished. But remember, tuition is not the only expense for your education. Expenses also include such things as the cost of supplies, books and commuting. Financial assistance may be available to help reduce some of the cost, so make sure to contact the college’s financial aid department to see what is available in Thorne Bay AK. Of course if you decide to attend an online school, a portion of these added costs, such as for commuting may be lessened or even eliminated.

Are Classes Offered that Match your Schedule? Many students continue working while attending college and need a flexible class schedule. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Thorne Bay AK, make sure that they are available at those times. If you can only enroll on a part time basis, make certain that the college you enroll in offers that alternative. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up classes missed because of sickness, work or family emergencies.
