Medical Coding Job Duties

Shungnak AK patient medical recordsMedical coders work on the forefront of the billing systems for Shungnak AK medical practices and hospitals. They have the responsibility to examine the treatment records of patients and convert all services provided into universal codes. These services can be for diagnosis, medical or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies utilized. There are multiple codes that are used in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders rely on information from sources such as physician and nursing notes, patient charts, and lab and radiology reports. Coders must know not only what total services were provided for accuracy, but must have a functioning knowledge of all private payer and government rules that impact coding also. Incorrectly coded claims can result in services not being covered, services being paid for at a lower rate, or the physician or facility being penalized for improper or fraudulent billing. Since improper coding can literally cost Shungnak AK physicians and medical facilities multiple thousands of dollars in earnings every year, a reliable medical coder is a necessary asset to the healthcare team. They can work in every kind of healthcare facility, including family practices, clinics, hospitals and critical care centers. It is not unusual for seasoned medical coders to operate at home as an offsite employee or an independent contractor.

Medical Billing Job Functions

medical billing collects revenue in Shungnak AK As vital as the medical coder’s role is, it would be for nothing without the contribution of the medical biller whose efforts produce revenue. Medical billing clerks are very important to Shungnak AK medical facilities and are practically responsible for keeping them in business. Often the coder and biller can be the same person within a medical organization, but they can also be 2 independent professionals. After the coder has carried out her or his job, the biller utilizes the codes provided to complete and submit claim forms to insurance companies, Medicaid or Medicare. After being adjusted by the applicable entity, patients can then be invoiced for deductibles or additional out of pocket expenses. On a routine basis, a medical billing professional may also do any of the following:

  • Verify health insurance coverages for patients and assist them with billing questions or concerns
  • Follow up on patient claims submitted and appeal those that have been declined
  • Work as an intermediary between the healthcare provider, the insurance carriers and the patients for accurate claim settlement
  • Create and control Accounts Receivables reports
  • Generate and manage unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billing clerks not only work for family practices, but also Shungnak AK hospitals, urgent care facilities, medical groups or nursing homes. They can work in every kind of medical facility that relies on the incomes generated from billing third party payers and patients.

While it is not a requirement in most cases to earn a professional certification, the program you select should be accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). Most programs simply require that you have either a high school diploma or a GED to qualify. The most expedient way to become either a medical coder or biller (or both) is to earn a certificate, which usually takes about 1 year to accomplish. An Associate Degree is also an option for a more expansive education, which for the majority of programs calls for 2 years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees for medical coding and billing are not abundantly available. Once your training has been completed, although not required in most states, you might desire to earn a professional certification. Certification is an excellent method for those new to the profession to show potential Shungnak AK employers that they are not only qualified but committed to their career. Some of the organizations that provide certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).
  • The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS).
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Completing an accredited medical billing and coding course, together with earning a professional certification, are the most effective ways to advance your new profession and succeed in the rapid growing Shungnak AK healthcare field.

And as an additional benefit, online schools are frequently cheaper than the traditional classroom alternatives. That’s why it’s important to verify that the online school you select is accredited to guarantee a superior education. We will cover the benefits of accreditation in the next section. Just make sure to confirm that any online training you are looking at is accredited by one of the national accrediting agencies, for example the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. So if you are dedicated enough to apply yourself to this style of learning, then acquiring your degree or certificate online might be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Medical Coder and Biller Programs

Questions to ask Shungnak AK medical billing and coding schoolsOnce you have a better idea what a medical biller and coder does, in addition to what education options are offered, you need to begin the process of comparing colleges. But since there a large number of training options available at community colleges as well as trade, vocational and technical schools within the Shungnak AK area, you should have a prepared list of questions to assess each one. And when you include all of the online colleges that offer medical coding and billing classes, the task can become somewhat formidable. As we have already addressed, expense and location are going to be relevant issues, particularly if you have a modest budget and will be driving to classes from your Shungnak home. And confirming that the program and school are accredited should be part of your vetting process also. So let’s take a look at a few of the additional questions that you should ask the colleges you are considering so that you can evaluate each one and make the ideal choice.

Is the School Accredited? It’s important that the program and school you decide on are accredited by a highly regarded accrediting organization, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online college, it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. Not only will accreditation help confirm that the training you receive will be of superior quality, it may help with your future employment also. Many Shungnak AK healthcare organizations will only employ entry level prospects that have completed an accredited medical coding and billing educational program. And financial aid and student loans are often only obtainable for programs that have obtained an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Prior to picking a medical coding and billing college, find out what its ranking and reputation are compared to other colleges. This is particularly relevant if you have no experience in the profession, since potential employers will basically be evaluating you based on the quality of your training. As we have addressed, verifying that the school is accredited is a first step. Checking with college rating organizations, for example U.S. News and World Report, can confirm the quality of the school also. An alternative is to check with several Shungnak AK healthcare organizations that you may be interested in working for and ask which colleges they recommend. Keep in mind that even when the school itself does not have an excellent reputation, its medical billing and coding program may still be highly regarded.

Is there a Job Referral Program? Finding a job in Shungnak AK after graduating in your new profession can be difficult without the support of a job assistance program. Find out if the colleges you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their job placement rates are. A rapid and high placement rate is an excellent indication that the coding and billing college has a substantial network of healthcare employers where they can refer their graduates. It also implies that the college’s graduates are sought after in the marketplace.

Where is the College’s Location? If you are planning on commuting to class from your Shungnak AK residence, then the location of the campus will be of significant importance. Of course if you choose an medical billing and coding online program, then the location of the college will not be a consideration. One thing to remember is that if you go to classes at a junior or community college, most require a higher tuition for students that live outside of their districts. So you may prefer to first research those colleges that are within your local area.

What is the Overall Expense? Medical coding and billing training courses can fluctuate in cost based on the type of credential obtained and the length of training furnished. Just keep in mind, tuition is not the only cost of your education. Expenditures also include such items as the cost of books, supplies and commuting. Financial aid may be accessible to help offset some of the expense, so be sure to get in touch with the school’s financial aid department to find out what is available in Shungnak AK. Naturally if you decide to enroll in an online college, some of these additional costs, such as for commuting may be minimized or even eliminated.

Are Classes Available that Match your Schedule? A number of students continue working while attending school and need a flexible class schedule. If you can only attend classes during the evenings or on weekends near Shungnak AK, verify that they are offered at those times. If you can only attend on a part-time schedule, make certain that the program you enroll in provides that alternative. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up classes missed due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

    Shungnak, Alaska

Shungnak originally was settled in 1899, approximately 10 miles to the east along the Kobuk River.[6] The name "Shungnak" is derived from the Eskimo term "issingnak," which means jade, a stone found in the surrounding area.[7] In the 1920s, erosion along the river caused many residents to abandon the old townsite. In 1927, they resettled at a site originally known as "Kochuk." Residents decided to rename Kochuk as the new Shungnak. At the old Shungnak village, some residents chose to remain. To avoid confusion between the two villages, Old Shungnak became Kobuk in 1928.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.6 square miles (25 km2), of which 8.4 square miles (22 km2) is land and 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2) of it (13.10%) is water.

The present Shungnak first appeared on the 1930 U.S. Census as an unincorporated village. The Shungnak listed on the 1910 and 1920 censuses was for the Old Shungnak, which became Kobuk in 1928. This Shungnak has reported on every census since 1930. It was formally incorporated as a city in 1967.
