Medical Coding Job Functions

Saint Marys AK patient medical recordsMedical coders are on the front line of the billing systems for Saint Marys AK medical practices and hospitals. Coders have the responsibility to examine the treatment records of patients and assign universal codes to all services provided. These services can be for diagnosis, medical or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies used. There are various codes that are utilized in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders rely on information from sources including nursing and physician notes, patient charts, and lab and radiology reports. Coders must not only know what services were provided in total for accuracy, but must have a functioning knowledge of all government and private payer rules that impact coding as well. Inaccurately coded claims may result in services not being covered, services being paid at a reduced rate, or the provider being penalized for fraudulent or improper billing. Since improper coding can literally cost Saint Marys AK doctors and hospitals many thousands of dollars in earnings annually, a reliable medical coder is an important asset to the healthcare organization. They can work in any kind of healthcare facility, including family practices, clinics, hospitals and urgent care centers. It is not uncommon for seasoned medical coders to working from home as an independent contractor or offsite employee.

In many cases the coder and biller are the same individual within a medical facility, but they can also be two individual professionals. After the coder has completed his or her task, the biller utilizes the codes provided to fill out and submit claim forms to insurance companies, Medicare or Medicaid. After being adjusted by the applicable entity, patients can then be billed for deductibles and additional out of pocket costs. On a regular basis, a medical biller can also do any of the following:

  • Check health insurance coverages for patients and assist them with billing concerns or questions
  • Follow up on submitted patient claims and appeal those that have been denied
  • Act as an intermediate between the healthcare provider, the insurance companies and the patients for accurate claim resolution
  • Produce and manage Accounts Receivables reports
  • Produce and manage unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billing clerks not only are employed by family practices, but also Saint Marys AK hospitals, urgent care facilities, medical groups or nursing homes. They may work in every type of medical facility that relies on the incomes generated from billing patients and third party payers.

Points to Ask Medical Coding and Billing Schools

Questions to ask Saint Marys AK medical billing and coding schoolsOnce you have a better idea just what a medical biller and coder does, as well as what training options are offered, you need to start the process of comparing colleges. But since there many training options offered at community colleges and technical, trade and vocational schools within the Saint Marys AK area, you need to have a ready list of questions in order to analyze each one. And when you add all of the online schools that offer medical billing and coding classes, the task can become somewhat daunting. As we have already addressed, expense and location are going to be important issues, particularly if you have a limited budget and will be commuting to classes from your Saint Marys residence. And whether or not the program and school are accredited must be part of your vetting procedure as well. So let’s take a look at some of the other questions that you should ask the schools you are reviewing so that you can analyze each one and make the ideal choice.

Is the Training Accredited? It’s important that the program and school you choose are accredited by a highly regarded accrediting agency, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online school, it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. Not only will accreditation help ensure that the training you receive will be of superior quality, it could help secure future employment as well. A number of Saint Marys AK medical facilities will only employ entry level prospects that have completed an accredited medical coding and billing training course. And financial aid and student loans are frequently only offered for colleges that have earned an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Prior to enrolling in a medical coding and billing college, find out what its reputation and ranking are among other colleges. This is especially imperative if you have no experience in the industry, since potential employers will primarily be evaluating you based on the quality of your training. As we have covered, confirming that the college is accredited is a first step. Checking with school rating organizations, for instance U.S. News and World Report, can confirm the quality of the school also. An alternative is to call several Saint Marys AK medical organizations that you may have an interest in working for and find out which programs they suggest. Keep in mind that even if the school itself does not have an exceptional reputation, its medical billing and coding program may still be highly regarded.

Is there an Employment Assistance Program? Finding employment in Saint Marys AK after graduating in your new field might be challenging without the support of a job placement program. Find out if the schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their job placement rates are. A rapid and high placement rate is a good indication that the coding and billing school has a sizable network of medical care employers where they can refer their graduates. It also suggests that the school’s graduates are sought after in the marketplace.

Where is the College Located? If you are intending on commuting to class from your Saint Marys AK residence, then the location of the campus will be of significant importance. Of course if you enroll in an online medical billing and coding program, then the location of the school will not be important. One thing to remember is that if you go to classes at a community or junior college, many charge a higher tuition for enrollees that reside outside of their districts. So you might prefer to first look at those schools that are within your local area.

What is the Total Expense? Medical coding and billing training courses can vary in cost depending on the type of credential obtained and the amount of training furnished. Just keep in mind, tuition is not the only cost of your education. Expenses also consist of such things as the cost of books, supplies and commuting. Financial aid might be available to help offset a portion of the cost, so be sure to contact the college’s financial aid department to find out what is available in Saint Marys AK. Naturally if you decide to enroll in an online college, some of these added costs, particularly for commuting may be minimized or even eliminated.

Are Classes Available that Fit your Schedule? Many students continue working while attending college and need a convenient class schedule. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Saint Marys AK, confirm that they are available at those times. If you can only enroll on a part time basis, check that the program you select offers that option. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up classes missed due to work, illness or family emergencies.
