Medical Coding Job Description

Levelock AK patient medical recordsMedical coders work on the front line of the billing systems for Levelock AK medical practices and hospitals. Coders have the responsibility to review the medical records of patients and assign universal codes to all services provided. These services may be for diagnosis, medical or dental procedures, or any medical supplies or equipment used. There are several codes that are used in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders use information from sources such as nursing and physician notes, patient charts, and radiology and lab reports. Medical Coders must know not only what total services were provided for accuracy, but must have a functioning knowledge of all government and private payer regulations that impact coding also. Incorrectly coded claims may lead to services not being paid for, services being paid at a reduced rate, or the physician or facility being penalized for improper or fraudulent billing. Since improper coding can literally cost Levelock AK physicians and medical facilities multiple thousands of dollars in revenue annually, a reliable medical coder is a vital asset to the healthcare team. They can work in every kind of healthcare facility, including private practices, clinics, hospitals and emergency care centers. It is not unusual for seasoned medical coders to work at home as an independent contractor or offsite employee.

Medical Biller Job Description

medical billing collects revenue in Levelock AK As essential as the medical coder’s role is, it would be for naught without the contribution of the medical biller whose labors produce revenue. Medical billing clerks are extremely important to Levelock AK medical organizations and are practically responsible for keeping them in business. Frequently the coder and biller are the same man or woman within a healthcare facility, but they can also be two independent specialists. After the coder has performed his or her duty, the biller uses the codes supplied to fill out and submit claim forms to insurance carriers, Medicare or Medicaid. After they have been adjusted by the appropriate entity, patients can then be invoiced for deductibles and other out of pocket costs. On a regular basis, a medical biller may also do any of the following:

  • Check medical insurance benefits for patients and help them with billing concerns or questions
  • Follow up on patient claims submitted and appeal any that have been declined
  • Work as a mediator between the healthcare provider, the insurance carriers and the patients for proper claim settlement
  • Create and manage Accounts Receivables reports
  • Produce and take care of unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billers not only are employed by private practices, but also Levelock AK emergency care facilities, hospitals, medical groups or nursing homes. They can work in any type of medical facility that depends on the incomes generated from billing patients and third party payers.

Medical Billing and Coding Training and Certification

instructor with Levelock AK medical billing and coding class studentIt’s important that you receive your education from a reputable school, whether it’s a community college, technical or trade school. While it is not required in most cases to earn a professional certification, the program you enroll in should be accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). The majority of schools just require that you have either a high school diploma or a GED to appy. The most expedient way to become either a medical biller or coder (or both) is to attain a certificate, which normally takes about one year to finish. An Associate Degree is an alternative for a more comprehensive education, which for almost all programs calls for 2 years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees for medical coding and billing are not abundantly available. When your education has been concluded, although not mandated in most states, you may want to attain a professional certification. Certification is an effective way for those new to the profession to show potential Levelock AK employers that they are not only qualified but dedicated to their occupation. Some of the organizations that offer certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).
  • The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS).
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Graduating from an accredited medical billing and coding program, combined with attaining a professional certification, are the best ways to advance your new career and succeed in the rapid growing Levelock AK healthcare field.

Expenses for such items as tuition, course materials and commuting may be reduced or eliminated. But be careful, as not all online programs are reputable. For that reason it’s essential to confirm that any online school you choose is accredited to guarantee a premium education. We will address the benefits of accreditation in the next section. Just be sure to check that any online school you are considering is accredited by one of the national accrediting organizations, for example the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. So if you are disciplined enough to apply yourself to this type of learning, then earning your degree or certificate online might be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Medical Biller and Coder Courses

Questions to ask Levelock AK medical billing and coding schoolsOnce you have a general idea just what a medical coder and biller does, along with what training options are offered, you need to begin the process of researching schools. But since there are numerous training options available at community colleges and vocational, technical and trade schools within the Levelock AK area, you should have a prepared list of questions to evaluate each one. And when you add all of the online colleges that offer medical billing and coding classes, the project can become rather formidable. As we have already covered, expense and location are going to be important issues, especially if you have a limited budget and will be commuting to classes from your Levelock home. And verifying that the program and school are accredited must be part of your vetting process also. So let’s take a look at several of the other questions that you should ask the colleges you are considering so that you can analyze each one and make the appropriate choice.

Is the Training Accredited? It’s vital that the program and college you choose are accredited by a recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online program, it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. Not only will accreditation help ensure that the training you receive will be of superior quality, it may help with your future employment also. A number of Levelock AK healthcare facilities will only employ entry level candidates that have completed an accredited medical coding and billing educational course. And financial assistance and student loans are often only obtainable for schools that have received an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Prior to picking a medical coding and billing school, check out what its reputation and ranking are among other programs. This is particularly important if you have no experience in the field, since potential employers will mainly be evaluating you based on the quality of your training. As we have covered, verifying that the college is accredited is an initial step. Checking with college rating organizations, such as U.S. News and World Report, can verify the quality of the school as well. An alternative is to get in touch with a few Levelock AK healthcare organizations that you may have an interest in working for and ask which colleges they suggest. Keep in mind that even when the school itself does not have an excellent reputation, its medical billing and coding program may still be highly regarded.

Is there a Job Referral Program? Finding a job in Levelock AK after graduation in your new profession might be difficult without the help of a job placement program. Ask if the colleges you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their job placement rates are. A high and rapid placement rate is an excellent indication that the billing and coding school has a sizable network of medical care employers where they can refer their graduates. It also indicates that the college’s graduates are sought after in the marketplace.

Where is the College Located? If you are planning on commuting to class from your Levelock AK residence, then the location of the school will be of significant importance. Obviously if you enroll in an medical billing and coding online program, then the location of the college will not be a factor. One thing to keep in mind is that if you attend classes at a junior or community college, many require a higher tuition for students that live outside of their districts. So you may want to first research those colleges that are within your local area.

What is the Overall Cost? Medical coding and billing training courses can fluctuate in cost based on the type of credential earned and the length of training provided. Just keep in mind, tuition is not the only expense for your education. Expenses also include such items as the cost of supplies, books and commuting. Financial aid might be obtainable to help offset a portion of the expense, so don’t forget to get in touch with the school’s financial aid department to see what is offered in Levelock AK. Naturally if you decide to attend an online school, a portion of these additional costs, particularly for commuting may be minimized or even eliminated.

Are Classes Available that Fit your Schedule? Many students continue working while attending school and require a convenient class schedule. If you can only attend classes during the evenings or on weekends near Levelock AK, confirm that they are available at those times. If you can only enroll on a part time basis, check that the program you enroll in provides that alternative. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up classes missed due to sickness, work or family emergencies.
