Medical Coding Job Summary

Emmonak AK patient medical recordsMedical coders work on the front line of the billing systems for Emmonak AK medical practices and hospitals. They have the responsibility to analyze the treatment records of patients and assign universal codes to all services provided. These services may be for medical, diagnosis or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies utilized. There are multiple codes that are used in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders rely on information from sources including nursing and physician notes, patient charts, and lab and radiology reports. Coders must not only know what services were provided in total for accurate reporting, but must have a working knowledge of all private payer and government regulations that affect coding also. Improperly coded claims may lead to services not being paid for, services being paid at a reduced rate, or the physician or facility being penalized for improper or fraudulent billing. Since improper coding can literally cost Emmonak AK physicians and medical facilities multiple thousands of dollars in income every year, a good medical coder is a necessary asset to the healthcare team. They can operate in any kind of healthcare facility, including private practices, clinics, hospitals and urgent care centers. It is not uncommon for seasoned medical coders to operate at home as an offsite employee or an independent contractor.

Medical Biller Job Functions

medical billing collects revenue in Emmonak AK As vital as the medical coder’s role is, it would be for nothing without the contribution of the medical biller whose efforts generate revenue. Medical billing clerks are very important to Emmonak AK medical facilities and are literally responsible for keeping them in business. Often the coder and biller can be the same man or woman within a medical organization, but they can also be two individual specialists. When the coder has performed his or her job, the biller uses the codes supplied to complete and submit claim forms to insurance companies, Medicaid or Medicare. After they have been paid by the appropriate organization, patients can then be charged for deductibles and other out of pocket costs. On a regular basis, a medical billing clerk may also do any of the following:

  • Confirm medical insurance coverages for patients and assist them with billing concerns or questions
  • Check on patient claims submitted and appeal those that have been denied
  • Function as an intermediary between the medical provider, the insurance carriers and the patients for correct claim resolution
  • Generate and control Accounts Receivables reports
  • Generate and deal with unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billing clerks not only are employed by private practices, but also Emmonak AK hospitals, urgent care facilities, nursing homes or medical groups. They may practice in every type of healthcare facility that relies on the revenues generated from billing third party payers and patients.

After your training has been concluded, although not mandated in most states, you may wish to earn a professional certification. Certification is an effective means for those new to the profession to show prospective Emmonak AK employers that they are not only qualified but committed to their career. A few of the organizations that offer certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).

  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Questions to Ask Medical Billing and Coding Courses

Questions to ask Emmonak AK medical billing and coding schoolsOnce you have a general idea what a medical coder and biller does, along with what education options are available, you need to begin the process of comparing schools. But since there are numerous training options offered at community colleges and trade, vocational and technical schools within the Emmonak AK area, you must have a prepared list of questions in order to analyze each one. And when you include all of the online colleges that offer medical billing and coding classes, the project can become somewhat daunting. As we have already covered, expense and location are going to be relevant factors, particularly if you have a limited budget and will be driving to classes from your Emmonak home. And confirming that the program and school are accredited must be part of your vetting procedure as well. So let’s review several of the other questions that you should ask the programs you are considering so that you can analyze each one and make the ideal choice.

Is the Program Accredited? It’s important that the program and college you select are accredited by a recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online program, it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. Not only will accreditation help guarantee that the training you get will be of the highest quality, it might help with your future employment as well. A number of Emmonak AK healthcare organizations will only hire entry level prospects that have completed an accredited medical billing and coding training program. And financial assistance and student loans are often only offered for schools that have earned an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Prior to selecting a medical coding and billing school, find out what its reputation and ranking are compared to other schools. This is particularly important if you have no experience in the industry, since potential employers will primarily be evaluating you based on the quality of your education. As we have discussed, verifying that the program is accredited is an initial step. Checking with school rating organizations, such as U.S. News and World Report, can validate the quality of the school as well. Another option is to contact a few Emmonak AK healthcare organizations that you might be interested in working for and ask which schools they suggest. Bear in mind that even when the college itself does not have an exceptional reputation, its medical coding and billing program may still be well regarded.

Is there an Employment Referral Program? Obtaining employment in Emmonak AK after graduation in your new profession can be challenging without the support of a job placement program. Check if the colleges you are considering have job placement programs and what their job placement rates are. A high and rapid placement rate is an excellent indication that the coding and billing college has a considerable network of healthcare employers where they can refer their graduates. It also indicates that the college’s graduates are sought after in the marketplace.

Where is the School’s Location? If you are intending on commuting to class from your Emmonak AK residence, then the location of the program will be of significant importance. Naturally if you enroll in an medical coding and billing online program, then the location of the college will not be a consideration. One thing to bear in mind is that if you go to classes at a community or junior college, many require a higher tuition for enrollees that live outside of their districts. So you may prefer to first look at those schools that are within your local area.

What is the Total Cost? Medical billing and coding training courses can fluctuate in cost based on the type of credential acquired and the length of training provided. But remember, tuition is not the only expense for your education. Costs also include such things as the cost of supplies, books and commuting. Financial aid may be available to help offset some of the cost, so be sure to contact the college’s financial aid department to see what is available in Emmonak AK. Naturally if you decide to enroll in an online school, some of these added costs, such as for commuting may be minimized or even eliminated.

Are Classes Offered that Fit your Schedule? A number of students continue working while going to school and need a flexible class schedule. If you can only attend classes during the evenings or on weekends near Emmonak AK, verify that they are offered at those times. If you can only attend on a part-time schedule, make sure that the school you decide on offers that option. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up classes missed because of illness, work or family responsibilities.
