Medical Coding Job Duties

Ambler AK patient medical recordsMedical coders are on the front line of the billing systems for Ambler AK private practices and healthcare organizations. Coders have the responsibility to analyze the medical records of patients and convert all services provided into universal codes. These services may be for diagnosis, medical or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies utilized. There are multiple codes that are used in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders rely on information from sources such as physician and nursing notes, patient charts, and radiology and lab reports. Coders must know not only what total services were provided for accuracy, but must have a functioning knowledge of all private payer and government rules that impact coding also. Improperly coded claims may result in services not being covered, services being paid for at a reduced rate, or the provider being penalized for fraudulent or improper billing. Since improper coding can in fact cost Ambler AK physicians and medical facilities many thousands of dollars in income annually, a proficient medical coder is an important asset to the healthcare organization. They can operate in any type of healthcare facility, including family practices, hospitals, clinics and urgent care centers. It is not unusual for experienced medical coders to operate at home as an independent contractor or offsite employee.

On a regular basis, a medical billing clerk can also do any of the following:

  • Follow up on submitted patient claims and appeal those that have been declined

Most colleges just require that you have either a high school diploma or a GED to qualify. An Associate Degree is an alternative for a more comprehensive education, which for almost all programs requires 2 years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees for medical billing and coding are not abundantly available. When your education has been concluded, although not mandated in the majority of states, you may want to earn a professional certification. A few of the organizations that provide certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).

  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

And confirming that the school and program are accredited should be part of your vetting procedure also. So let’s take a look at several of the other questions that you should ask the colleges you are looking at so that you can compare each one and make the appropriate choice.

Is the Training Accredited? It’s vital that the school and program you choose are accredited by a respected accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online school, it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. Not only will accreditation help ensure that the training you get will be of the highest quality, it might help with your future employment also. Many Ambler AK healthcare organizations will only employ entry level applicants that have completed an accredited medical billing and coding educational program. And financial assistance and student loans are often only obtainable for schools that have obtained an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Prior to choosing a medical billing and coding school, find out what its ranking and reputation are among other schools. This is particularly relevant if you have no experience in the field, since potential employers will mainly be relying on the quality of your education. As we have discussed, verifying that the school is accredited is an initial step. Checking with school rating organizations, for example U.S. News and World Report, can verify the quality of the school also. An alternative is to call several Ambler AK medical organizations that you might be interested in working for and find out which schools they suggest. Keep in mind that even when the school itself does not have an outstanding reputation, its medical billing and coding program may still be highly regarded.

Is there an Employment Assistance Program? Finding employment in Ambler AK after graduating in your new profession can be difficult without the help of a job assistance program. Find out if the schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their job placement rates are. A rapid and high placement rate is a good indication that the billing and coding college has a significant network of healthcare employers where they can place their graduates. It also indicates that the college’s graduates are sought after in the marketplace.

Where is the School Located? If you are planning on driving to class from your Ambler AK residence, then the location of the school will be of prime importance. Of course if you enroll in an medical coding and billing online program, then the location of the college will not be a consideration. One thing to bear in mind is that if you go to classes at a community or junior college, many require a higher tuition for students that reside outside of their districts. So you might prefer to first consider those schools that are within your local area.

What is the Complete Cost? Medical coding and billing training courses can vary in cost depending on the type of credential obtained and the length of training furnished. Just keep in mind, tuition is not the only expense for your education. Expenses also consist of such items as the cost of books, supplies and commuting. Financial aid may be available to help reduce a portion of the cost, so make sure to get in touch with the college’s financial assistance department to find out what is offered in Ambler AK. Of course if you decide to enroll in an online college, a portion of these added costs, such as for commuting may be lessened or even eliminated.

Are Classes Offered that Fit your Schedule? Many students continue working while going to school and need a convenient class schedule. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Ambler AK, make sure that they are offered at those times. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify that the college you choose provides that alternative. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up classes missed due to sickness, work or family responsibilities.
