Medical Coder Job Duties

Citronelle AL patient medical recordsMedical coders are on the forefront of the billing systems for Citronelle AL private practices and hospitals. They have the responsibility to analyze the medical records of patients and assign universal codes to all services provided. These services can be for diagnosis, medical or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies used. There are several codes that are utilized in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders rely on information from sources such as nursing and physician notes, patient charts, and lab and radiology reports. Medical Coders must know not only what total services were provided for accuracy, but must have a working knowledge of all government and private payer rules that impact coding also. Inaccurately coded claims may lead to services not being covered, services being paid for at a decreased rate, or the physician or facility being penalized for fraudulent or improper billing. Since improper coding can actually cost Citronelle AL physicians and medical facilities multiple thousands of dollars in income annually, a reliable medical coder is a vital asset to the healthcare team. They can operate in every type of healthcare facility, including family practices, hospitals, clinics and emergency care centers. It is not unusual for professional medical coders to work at home as an offsite employee or an independent contractor.

Medical Biller Job Duties

medical billing collects revenue in Citronelle AL As crucial as the medical coder’s job is, it would be for nothing without the contribution of the medical biller whose efforts generate revenue. Often the biller and coder can be the same man or woman within a healthcare organization, but they can also be two independent professionals. When the coder has completed his or her job, the biller utilizes the codes furnished to fill out and submit claim forms to insurance companies, Medicare or Medicaid. After being paid by the applicable entity, patients can then be billed for deductibles and other out of pocket costs. On a regular basis, a medical billing clerk may also do any of the following:

  • Check medical insurance coverages for patients and assist them with billing questions or concerns
  • Check on patient claims submitted and appeal any that have been declined
  • Work as an intermediate between the healthcare provider, the insurance carriers and the patients for accurate claim settlement
  • Create and control Accounts Receivables reports
  • Generate and deal with unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billers not only work for family practices, but also Citronelle AL hospitals, urgent care facilities, medical groups or nursing homes. They may practice in any type of medical facility that relies on the revenues generated by billing patients and third party payers.

For that reason it’s imperative to verify that any online course you choose is accredited to ensure a quality education. We will address the advantages of accreditation in the next section. Just make sure to confirm that any online training you are researching is accredited by one of the national accrediting organizations, such as the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. So if you are disciplined enough to commit yourself to this type of learning, then earning your degree or certificate online might be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Medical Billing and Coding Programs

Questions to ask Citronelle AL medical billing and coding schoolsOnce you have a general idea what a medical biller and coder does, as well as what training options are offered, you need to start the process of comparing colleges. But since there are numerous training options available at community colleges and technical, trade and vocational schools within the Citronelle AL area, you must have a ready list of questions to assess each one. And when you add all of the online colleges that offer medical billing and coding classes, the project can become rather formidable. As we have already addressed, expense and location are going to be relevant factors, especially if you have a modest budget and will be commuting to classes from your Citronelle residence. And whether or not the program and school are accredited must be part of your vetting procedure as well. So let’s review some of the additional questions that you should ask the colleges you are considering so that you can analyze each one and make the right choice.

Is the Training Accredited? It’s important that the school and program you decide on are accredited by a highly regarded accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online program, it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. Not only will accreditation help confirm that the training you get will be of the highest quality, it could help with your future employment also. A number of Citronelle AL medical facilities will only hire entry level prospects that have completed an accredited medical billing and coding educational course. And financial aid and student loans are in many cases only obtainable for programs that have earned an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Before choosing a medical billing and coding college, check out what its reputation and ranking are compared to other programs. This is especially relevant if you have no experience in the industry, since potential employers will mostly be evaluating you based on the quality of your education. As we have covered, confirming that the school is accredited is a first step. Checking with school rating organizations, for instance U.S. News and World Report, can verify the quality of the school also. An alternative is to contact a few Citronelle AL medical organizations that you might have an interest in working for and find out which programs they recommend. Keep in mind that even if the college itself does not have an excellent reputation, its medical coding and billing program may still be well regarded.

Is there a Job Assistance Program? Finding employment in Citronelle AL after graduation in your new profession might be difficult without the help of a job placement program. Find out if the schools you are looking at have job placement programs and what their job placement rates are. A high and rapid placement rate is a good indication that the coding and billing school has a significant network of medical care employers where they can refer their graduates. It also suggests that the college’s graduates are sought after in the marketplace.

Where is the College’s Location? If you are anticipating driving to class from your Citronelle AL residence, then the location of the program will be of prime importance. Naturally if you enroll in an medical coding and billing online program, then the location of the college will not be a consideration. One thing to bear in mind is that if you go to classes at a junior or community college, many charge a higher tuition for students that live outside of their districts. So you might prefer to first consider those colleges that are within your local area.

What is the Overall Expense? Medical coding and billing certification programs can vary in cost based on the type of credential obtained and the amount of training provided. But remember, tuition is not the only expense for your education. Costs also include such items as the cost of supplies, books and commuting. Financial assistance may be accessible to help reduce a portion of the cost, so don’t forget to contact the school’s financial assistance department to see what is available in Citronelle AL. Of course if you decide to enroll in an online school, a portion of these added costs, such as for commuting may be reduced or even eliminated.

Are Classes Accessible that Accommodate your Schedule? A number of students keep working while going to college and need a flexible class schedule. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Citronelle AL, make sure that they are available at those times. If you can only attend on a part time basis, verify that the college you pick provides that alternative. Also, ask what the process is for making up classes missed due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Citronelle, Alabama

Citronelle is a city on the northern border of Mobile County, Alabama, United States. At the 2010 census the population was 3,905. It is included in the Mobile metropolitan statistical area. It is about 34 miles from the port of Mobile near the Gulf Coast.

The first known European explorers of this area were French in the 18th century. They learned that the land had healing herbs and mineral springs. The area was settled in 1811 and established as a jurisdiction (incorporated) in 1892. The name "Citronelle" is French and is derived from the citronella plant, which is native to the area. In the late 19th century, the town became a popular resort destination because of the climate, herbs, and its healing waters. Many hotels were built to accommodate the surge of visitors.

On May 4, 1865, one of the last significant Confederate armies was surrendered by Lieutenant General Richard Taylor under the "Surrender Oak." This was the third in the series of five major surrenders of armies that ended the war. The two previous surrenders occurred at Appomattox Court House, Virginia between General Robert E. Lee and US General Ulysses S. Grant; and the second and largest at Bennett Place near Durham, North Carolina between US General William T. Sherman and General Joseph E. Johnston.
