Medical Coding Job Summary

Chatom AL patient medical recordsMedical coders work on the forefront of the billing systems for Chatom AL medical practices and hospitals. Coders have the responsibility to analyze the medical records of patients and assign universal codes to all services provided. These services can be for medical, diagnosis or dental procedures, or any equipment or medical supplies used. There are various codes that are utilized in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders rely on information from sources such as physician and nursing notes, patient charts, and lab and radiology reports. Medical Coders must know not only what total services were provided for accurate reporting, but must have a functioning knowledge of all government and private payer regulations that affect coding also. Incorrectly coded claims can lead to services not being paid for, services being paid at a decreased rate, or the provider being penalized for improper or fraudulent billing. Since improper coding can in fact cost Chatom AL hospitals and doctors many thousands of dollars in income every year, a proficient medical coder is a vital asset for any healthcare team. They can operate in any kind of healthcare facility, including family practices, hospitals, clinics and critical care centers. It is not uncommon for seasoned medical coders to work at home as an independent contractor or offsite employee.

Medical Billing Job Functions

medical billing collects revenue in Chatom AL As vital as the medical coder’s job is, it would be for naught without the collaboration of the medical biller whose efforts produce revenue. Medical billing clerks are extremely important to Chatom AL healthcare organizations and are literally responsible for keeping them in business. Frequently the biller and coder can be the same person within a healthcare facility, but they can also be two individual specialists. After the coder has completed her or his duty, the biller utilizes the codes supplied to fill out and submit claim forms to insurance companies, Medicare or Medicaid. After being adjusted by the applicable organization, patients can then be charged for deductibles and other out of pocket costs. On a routine basis, a medical billing professional can also do any of the following:

  • Confirm health insurance benefits for patients and help them with billing concerns or questions
  • Follow up on patient claims submitted and appeal those that have been denied
  • Function as an intermediate between the medical provider, the insurance carriers and the patients for accurate claim resolution
  • Create and oversee Accounts Receivables reports
  • Produce and manage unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billing clerks not only work for family practices, but also Chatom AL hospitals, urgent care facilities, nursing homes or medical groups. They may practice in every type of healthcare facility that depends on the revenues generated by billing third party payers and patients.

Questions to Ask Medical Coding and Billing Schools

Questions to ask Chatom AL medical billing and coding schoolsNow that you have a general idea just what a medical coder and biller does, as well as what training options are available, you need to start the process of evaluating schools. But since there a large number of training options available at community colleges as well as trade, vocational and technical schools within the Chatom AL area, you need to have a ready list of questions to evaluate each one. As we have already covered, expense and location are going to be relevant issues, particularly if you have a limited budget and will be commuting to classes from your Chatom residence. And verifying that the school and program are accredited must be part of your vetting procedure as well. So let’s review several of the additional questions that you should ask the programs you are looking at so that you can analyze each one and make the appropriate choice.

Is the Program Accredited? It’s important that the program and school you choose are accredited by a highly regarded accrediting agency, for instance the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online college, it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. Not only will accreditation help ensure that the training you receive will be of the highest quality, it could help with your future employment also. Many Chatom AL healthcare organizations will only employ entry level candidates that have completed an accredited medical billing and coding training course. And financial aid and student loans are in many cases only obtainable for colleges that have obtained an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Prior to choosing a medical billing and coding school, check out what its reputation and ranking are among other colleges. This is especially relevant if you have no experience in the field, since potential employers will primarily be relying on the quality of your education. As we have covered, confirming that the school is accredited is an initial step. Checking with college rating organizations, such as U.S. News and World Report, can verify the quality of the school also. Another option is to check with several Chatom AL healthcare organizations that you might have an interest in working for and ask which colleges they suggest. Remember that even when the school itself does not have an exceptional reputation, its medical coding and billing program may still be well regarded.

Is there a Job Referral Program? Finding a job in Chatom AL after graduation in your new profession can be difficult without the support of a job placement program. Check if the colleges you are looking at have job placement programs and what their job placement rates are. A high and rapid placement rate is an excellent indication that the coding and billing school has a significant network of medical care employers where they can place their graduates. It also indicates that the school’s graduates are sought after in the marketplace.

Where is the School’s Location? If you are intending on driving to class from your Chatom AL residence, then the location of the college will be of prime importance. Naturally if you enroll in an medical billing and coding online program, then the location of the school will not be important. One thing to bear in mind is that if you attend classes at a junior or community college, most charge a higher tuition for enrollees that reside outside of their districts. So you might want to first research those schools that are within your local area.

What is the Total Expense? Medical coding and billing training programs can fluctuate in cost depending on the type of credential acquired and the length of training furnished. Just keep in mind, tuition is not the only expense for your education. Expenses also include such things as the cost of books, supplies and commuting. Financial aid may be obtainable to help reduce a portion of the cost, so make sure to contact the school’s financial assistance department to find out what is offered in Chatom AL. Of course if you decide to attend an online school, some of these added costs, particularly for commuting may be minimized or even eliminated.

Are Classes Offered that Fit your Schedule? A number of students keep working while going to college and need a flexible class schedule. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Chatom AL, verify that they are offered at those times. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the college you pick offers that alternative. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up classes missed because of sickness, work or family responsibilities.
