Medical Coding Job Description

Boligee AL patient medical recordsMedical coders work on the forefront of the billing systems for Boligee AL medical practices and healthcare organizations. They have the responsibility to review the medical records of patients and assign universal codes to all services provided. These services may be for medical, diagnosis or dental procedures, or any medical supplies or equipment utilized. There are multiple codes that are used in the conversion, including:

  • CPT codes (Current Procedural Terminology).
  • ICD codes (International Classification of Diseases).
  • HCPCS codes (Healthcare Common Procedure Coding).

Medical coders depend on information from sources such as physician and nursing notes, patient charts, and lab and radiology reports. Coders must know not only what total services were provided for accuracy, but must have a working knowledge of all government and private payer rules that affect coding as well. Inaccurately coded claims may lead to services not being covered, services being paid at a reduced rate, or the provider being penalized for improper or fraudulent billing. Since improper coding can actually cost Boligee AL physicians and medical facilities multiple thousands of dollars in earnings annually, a reliable medical coder is an important asset for any healthcare team. They can operate in any type of healthcare facility, including private practices, hospitals, clinics and emergency care centers. It is not unusual for professional medical coders to operate at home as an independent contractor or offsite employee.

Medical Biller Job Duties

medical billing collects revenue in Boligee AL As important as the medical coder’s role is, it would be for naught without the collaboration of the medical biller whose labors generate revenue. Medical billing clerks are extremely important to Boligee AL medical organizations and are practically responsible for keeping their doors open. Sometimes the biller and coder are the same person within a healthcare organization, but they can also be 2 separate specialists. Once the coder has performed his or her duty, the biller uses the codes furnished to fill out and submit claim forms to insurance companies, Medicare or Medicaid. After being adjusted by the appropriate entity, patients can then be invoiced for deductibles and additional out of pocket costs. On a routine basis, a medical billing professional might also do any of the following:

  • Confirm medical insurance benefits for patients and assist them with billing questions or concerns
  • Check on patient claims submitted and appeal any that have been denied
  • Work as an intermediate between the medical provider, the insurance companies and the patients for accurate claim settlement
  • Generate and manage Accounts Receivables reports
  • Create and handle unpaid patient collections accounts

Medical billing clerks not only are employed by family practices, but also Boligee AL hospitals, urgent care facilities, medical groups or nursing homes. They can practice in every type of healthcare facility that depends on the revenues generated from billing third party payers and patients.

Medical Biller and Coder Education and Certification

instructor with Boligee AL medical billing and coding class studentIt’s essential that you get your training from a reputable school, whether it’s a community college, technical or trade school. Although it is not a requirement in most cases to obtain a professional certification, the school you select should be accredited (more on the advantages of accreditation later). Most schools simply require that you have either a high school diploma or a GED to be eligible. The most expedient way to becoming either a medical biller or coder (or both) is to attain a certificate, which normally takes about 1 year to accomplish. An Associate Degree is also an option for a more extensive education, which for most colleges calls for two years of studies. Bachelor’s Degrees for medical billing and coding are not abundantly available. When your training has been completed, although not mandated in the majority of states, you might wish to earn a professional certification. Certification is an excellent method for those new to the profession to show prospective Boligee AL employers that they are not only qualified but dedicated to their career. A few of the organizations that offer certifications are:

  • American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
  • Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).
  • The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHCS).
  • American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

Graduating from an accredited medical coding and billing course, together with earning a professional certification, are the best ways to advance your new vocation and succeed in the fast growing Boligee AL medical care industry.

Medical Biller and Coder Online Colleges

Boligee AL student attending medical coding training onlineIf you are searching for convenience and the flexibility of attending classes from home, then choosing an online medical billing and coding program might be a good option. They can be especially appealing to individuals living in Boligee AL who plan on attending school while still working or have additional obligations that make going to classes on campus difficult. And as an additional advantage, online programs are in many cases less expensive than the traditional classroom alternatives. Costs for such items as tuition, study materials and commuting may be reduced or eliminated. But be careful, as not all online schools are reputable. That’s why it’s essential to confirm that the online course you choose is accredited to ensure a quality education. We will review the benefits of accreditation in the next section. Just make sure to check that any online school you are researching is accredited by one of the national accrediting organizations, for example the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. So if you are dedicated enough to apply yourself to this style of learning, then attaining your certificate or degree online may be the right choice for you.

Things to Ask Medical Biller and Coder Colleges

Questions to ask Boligee AL medical billing and coding schoolsOnce you have a general idea what a medical biller and coder does, in addition to what education options are offered, you need to begin the process of evaluating colleges. But since there are numerous training options available at community colleges as well as technical, trade and vocational schools within the Boligee AL area, you must have a prepared list of questions in order to assess each one. And when you include all of the online programs that offer medical coding and billing classes, the task can become rather formidable. As we have already covered, location and cost are going to be significant issues, especially if you have a limited budget and will be traveling to classes from your Boligee residence. And whether or not the school and program are accredited should be part of your vetting procedure also. So let’s review a few of the other questions that you should ask the schools you are looking at so that you can compare each one and make the ideal choice.

Is the Training Accredited? It’s essential that the program and college you pick are accredited by a recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools. If it’s an online program, it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. Not only will accreditation help ensure that the training you get will be of superior quality, it might help with your future employment as well. Many Boligee AL healthcare facilities will only hire entry level applicants that have completed an accredited medical billing and coding educational course. And financial aid and student loans are in many cases only available for colleges that have received an accreditation.

What is the School’s Reputation? Before choosing a medical coding and billing college, find out what its reputation and ranking are among other schools. This is especially important if you have no experience in the field, since potential employers will primarily be evaluating you based on the quality of your education. As we have addressed, making sure that the school is accredited is an initial step. Checking with college rating organizations, such as U.S. News and World Report, can verify the quality of the school as well. An alternative is to contact a few Boligee AL medical organizations that you may have an interest in working for and find out which colleges they recommend. Bear in mind that even when the school itself does not have an excellent reputation, its medical coding and billing program may still be highly regarded.

Is there a Job Referral Program? Finding employment in Boligee AL after graduation in your new profession may be challenging without the help of a job placement program. Find out if the colleges you are considering have job assistance programs and what their job placement rates are. A rapid and high placement rate is a good indication that the billing and coding college has a significant network of medical care employers where they can refer their graduates. It also indicates that the college’s graduates are sought after in the marketplace.

Where is the School’s Location? If you are intending on driving to class from your Boligee AL residence, then the location of the program will be of prime importance. Obviously if you select an medical coding and billing online program, then the location of the college will not be a factor. One thing to bear in mind is that if you go to classes at a community or junior college, many charge a higher tuition for students that reside outside of their districts. So you might want to first research those schools that are within your local area.

What is the Overall Expense? Medical coding and billing training programs can differ in cost based on the type of credential obtained and the length of training provided. Just keep in mind, tuition is not the only expense for your education. Costs also consist of such items as the cost of supplies, books and commuting. Financial assistance may be accessible to help reduce some of the expense, so make sure to check with the school’s financial assistance department to find out what is available in Boligee AL. Naturally if you decide to enroll in an online college, a portion of these additional costs, such as for commuting may be reduced or even eliminated.

Are Classes Available that Match your Schedule? Many students keep working while going to school and require a flexible class schedule. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Boligee AL, confirm that they are available at those times. If you can only enroll on a part time basis, make sure that the school you choose provides that option. Also, ask what the process is for making up classes missed because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
